Welcome to week four one of the most magical stages in a puppy’s early life. At this age, the litter begins to transform from sleepy newborns into playful, curious little characters

A Week of Awakening

At 4 weeks, puppies are becoming fully aware of the world around them.

Sharper Vision

Their eyesight is improving quickly now. They’re more focused, can follow movement, and may even look directly at you when you approach.

Better Hearing

No more muffled sounds they can hear properly, which means new noises are suddenly interesting… or surprising!

Growing Confidence and Early Play

This is when the litter begins to interact with each other in a meaningful way.

  • Little barks and playful growls

  • Wagging tails

  • Curious sniffing

  • Clumsy pounces

  • The first signs of who will be the mischief-maker

These interactions teach them essential social and communication skills they will use throughout their lives

The Start of Weaning

One of the biggest milestones this week is the beginning of the weaning process.

What happens during weaning:

  • Puppies are introduced to a soft, watery mixture of high quality puppy food.

  • They may walk through it as much as they eat it totally normal

  • Winnie still feeds them, but gradually a little less as they adjust to solids.

This transition helps puppies develop strong tummies and prepares them for completely independent eating.

Routine Begins to Form

While puppies are much more active now, sleep is still a huge part of their development, about 18 hours a day.

Their awake periods are short but packed with learning:

  • Exploring their environment

  • Interacting with siblings

  • Beginning to respond to human voices

  • Discovering toys and new textures

Every minute they’re awake, their little brains are making important connections.

Human Interaction Matters

This week marks the start of meaningful human socialisation.

Puppies begin to:

  • Seek attention

  • Wag their tails when spoken to

  • Enjoy gentle handling

  • Respond to soft voices and touch

Positive early handling helps raise confident, people friendly pups

A Special Stage

Week four is a turning point, puppies are beginning to act like little dogs rather than newborns. Their world is expanding rapidly, and every day brings new milestones.
