Bringing Your Puppy Home at 8 Weeks Old

At around 8 weeks of age, puppies are ready to leave their mum and littermates and begin life with their new families. This is an exciting time, but also a significant transition for your puppy. With the right preparation and understanding, you can help ensure a smooth and positive start.

Settling In

Your puppy may take a little time to adjust to their new environment. Being separated from their mother and siblings can feel unsettling at first, so it’s important to keep the first few days calm and quiet. Allow your puppy to explore at their own pace and avoid overwhelming them with too many visitors or experiences.

Routine & Feeding

Puppies thrive on consistency. Maintaining a regular routine for feeding, sleeping, playtime, and toilet breaks will help your puppy feel secure. I recommend continuing with the food your puppy has been raised on initially to avoid digestive upset. Any dietary changes should be introduced gradually.

Sleep & Comfort

Young puppies require a lot of rest. Providing a warm, comfortable sleeping area in a quiet part of the home will help them feel safe. Some puppies may cry at night initially reassurance, a familiar blanket, and a calm bedtime routine can make this transition easier.

Toilet Training

Accidents are normal in the early stages. Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after waking, eating, or playing. Positive reinforcement and consistency will help your puppy learn quickly.

Socialisation & Development

Early socialisation is key to raising a confident, well balanced dog. Gentle exposure to household noises, people, and handling should be positive and controlled. Training at this age should focus on building trust and confidence rather than correction.

Health & Ongoing Care

Your puppy will leave me with appropriate health checks, initial vaccinations (where applicable), microchip information, 4 weeks free insurance and guidance on worming and flea treatments.

A Lifetime Commitment

Bringing a puppy into your home is a long term commitment. Time, patience, training, and love will help your puppy grow into a happy, healthy adult dog and a cherished family member.

I wish you many happy years together and am always here for advice and support as your puppy settles into their new home.
