Pups are five weeks old and are in the middle of one of the most exciting stages of early development. They’re growing quickly, exploring their surroundings with curiosity, and showing early hints of the personalities they’ll develop.
1. Social Skills Are Blossoming
At this age, they’re becoming far more interactive with both their littermates and me. They’re learning critical social behaviours such as:
Bite inhibition during play
Understanding boundaries
Reading and using canine body language
These early interactions lay the groundwork for confidence and healthy communication later in life.
2. Exploring the Environment
Their coordination is improving, and they’re eager to investigate new textures, sounds, and objects. Short, supervised play sessions support mental and physical growth.
Common behaviours include:
More confident walking and trotting
Playing with enthusiasm
Sniffing and exploring new areas
3. Eating Like a Big Dog
This is the stage where they transition from Winnie’s milk to soft food. Meals are small but frequent, four times a day.
Healthy signs include:
A growing appetite
Steady weight gain
Interest in different textures and tastes
4. Teeth Are Coming In
Tiny teeth are emerging, and chewing becomes a natural outlet.
Helpful items include:
Soft chew toys
Safe teething options
Plenty of supervised playtime
5. Sensory Development Peaks
This week is part of a crucial sensory window. I'm introducing:
New sounds
Different floor textures
Gentle handling routines
Toys with varying noises and movements
These experiences help build resilience and confidence.
6. Beginning to Recognise Routines
Although too young for formal training, they can start noticing simple patterns. Consistency in feeding times, handling, and basic care helps them feel secure.
