Did You Know? Life at Eight Weeks Old — And Then There Were Gone
Eight weeks. The day we have been working toward since the very beginning and the day that, no matter how many litters I have had, never gets any easier to say goodbye.
This week Humphrey, Albie, Digby, and Summer reached the milestone that everything has been building toward. Eight weeks old, healthy, happy, confident, and ready. Well almost all of them. Because this time, one of them isn't going anywhere. Summer is staying right here with me and Devon, and I cannot pretend I am not absolutely thrilled about that.
Did you know… eight weeks is the ideal age for a puppy to go to their new home?
Eight weeks is widely recognised by behaviourists and vets as the optimum age for a puppy to make the transition to their new family. Humphrey, Albie, and Digby are fully weaned, socially developed, and at exactly the right point in the bonding window to form a deep and lasting attachment to their new people. It is not a coincidence, it is the result of eight weeks of careful, dedicated preparation.
Did you know… everything they have experienced shapes who they are today?
From Devon's warmth in those first hours, to their first wobbly steps, their first taste of solid food, their first trip outside in the sunshine, and every gentle handling session in between every single experience over these eight weeks has contributed to the confident, curious, loving puppies that Humphrey, Albie, and Digby are today. Nothing was by accident. Everything was with intention.
Did you know… the socialisation they received sets them up for life?
The work done during the socialisation window, the sounds, the surfaces, the people, the routines, the brushing, the handling gives each of these puppies the very best foundation for a happy, well adjusted life. Their new families are receiving a puppy that has been prepared with care, and I hope they feel that from the very first moment.
Did you know… Devon is an absolute hero?
From the moment she brought Humphrey, Albie, Digby, and Summer into the world, to the moment the last one settled into their new life, Devon has been magnificent. Patient, devoted, instinctive, and endlessly gentle. She gave everything she had to this litter, and she deserves all of the fuss, all of the rest, and every single treat she is about to receive. And now she gets to watch Summer grow up right alongside her. Devon, you are extraordinary.
Did you know… saying goodbye is actually a wonderful thing?
People often ask if it is hard to let them go. Of course I will miss Humphrey, Albie, and Digby, but watching them leave with their new families is genuinely one of the best parts of what I do. They are ready. They are confident, healthy, and full of life, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that they are going to thrive. That makes every goodbye a happy one.
Did you know… the best is still to come for each of these puppies?
As much as I will miss them, I know with absolute certainty that the lives ahead of Humphrey, Albie, and Digby are going to be wonderful. First nights in new beds, first walks, first games in the garden, first cuddles on the sofa. A whole life of love and adventure stretching out ahead of them. That thought makes the goodbye so much easier to bear.
Did you know… their new families are going to change their world?
A Cockapoo gives everything, their loyalty, their affection, their ridiculous charm and their boundless energy to the family they belong to. And the families of Humphrey, Albie, and Digby? They have been waiting, preparing, and loving these puppies since before they even met them. What a life these three little ones are stepping into.
Did you know… Summer is staying?
I couldn't let this litter go without mentioning that Summer has found her forever home right here. She came into the world eight weeks ago and she has stolen every piece of my heart and I simply wasn't ready to say goodbye. Devon is going to have the best companion, I am going to have the most wonderful new addition, and Summer has absolutely no idea how lucky she is. We are keeping her, and we could not be more excited.
Did you know… I will be thinking about every single one of them?
I never stop thinking about the puppies that have left here. I love hearing updates, seeing photos, and watching them grow into the dogs I always knew they would be. To the families of Humphrey, Albie, and Digby please keep in touch. These puppies will always have a very special place in my heart, and I will always want to know how they are getting on.
Eight weeks ago, Devon brought something truly magical into the world. Today, that magic went home and one very special piece of it stayed.
Thank you to everyone who has followed this journey, cheered us on, and shared in the joy of this litter. It has been an absolute privilege from the very first day to the very last.
Until the next time
And it won't be a long wait Bo & Freddie's puppies will be arriving very soon! Watch this space
