Did You Know? Life at Seven Weeks Old
Seven weeks old and these Cockapoo puppies are absolutely blooming. They are confident, characterful, and very much aware of exactly how adorable they are. Devon's job is nearly done, the new families are counting down the days, and every moment with this litter right now feels incredibly precious. Here is what is happening this week.
Did you know… seven weeks is one of the most important weeks for bonding with people? Behaviourists often highlight seven weeks as a particularly powerful point in the socialisation window for human bonding. Puppies at this age are primed to form strong attachments, and the positive experiences they have with people right now leave a lasting impression. I am making the most of every moment.
Did you know… they are now fully weaned?
By seven weeks, the puppies are completely independent of Devon's milk and eating solid puppy food confidently at every mealtime. Devon has done her job magnificently, and she is enjoying the freedom of having a little more time and space to herself. The puppies barely notice as they are far too busy with everything else life has to offer.
Did you know… their senses are now fully switched on?
Sight, hearing, smell, touch, everything is fully developed and working beautifully by seven weeks. These puppies are taking in the world with all five senses firing, processing and learning from everything around them at a remarkable rate. That bright, alert Cockapoo expression you can see in their eyes right now? That is a puppy who is absolutely switched on to life.
Did you know… fear can leave a lasting impression at this age?
Seven weeks is also known as the first fear imprint period. Any frightening or negative experience during this window can have a disproportionate and long lasting effect on a puppy's temperament. I am very mindful of this and make sure that every new experience this week is calm, positive, and handled with care. Setting these puppies up for confidence is my top priority.
Did you know… their problem solving skills are developing fast?
Watch a seven week old Cockapoo work out how to get to something they want and you will see a seriously capable little mind at work. They are testing, experimenting, and figuring things out with a persistence that is both impressive and exhausting. The Poodle intelligence that runs through every Cockapoo is very much making itself known this week.
Did you know… they are now interacting with toys properly?
Balls, soft toys, tuggy ropes , the seven week old puppies are engaging with toys in a much more intentional way this week. This is the beginning of play that will translate directly into the games they enjoy with their new families at home. I introduce a variety of toys this week so the puppies experience different textures, shapes, and types of play before they leave.
Did you know… their Cockapoo coat is really coming into its own this week?
By seven weeks, the soft puppy fluff is giving way to something much more defined, and you can now get a really clear picture of the coat each puppy is going to have. Some are showing beautiful loose waves, others tighter curls and every single one is utterly gorgeous.
Did you know… they are beginning to understand simple routines?
Mealtimes, play sessions, rest time, the puppies at seven weeks are beginning to anticipate and respond to a daily rhythm. Establishing a gentle routine now makes the transition to their new home significantly easier. The families waiting for these puppies will find that a consistent schedule from day one makes a world of difference.
Did you know… now is the perfect time to puppy proof your home?
With going home day approaching fast, this is the ideal week for new families to get their homes ready. Think about trailing wires, gaps behind furniture, stair gates, and anything at puppy nose height that shouldn't be chewed or swallowed. A Cockapoo puppy is curious, clever, and surprisingly quick, a well puppy proofed home means a safe and happy arrival for everyone.
Did you know… going home is just around the corner?
In just a short time, these puppies will be taking the biggest step of their young lives, leaving their littermates, leaving Devon, and beginning the adventure they were born for. My job now is to make sure every single one of them leaves here healthy, happy, confident, and ready. I think they are going to be absolutely brilliant. I might need a moment when they go, but what a privilege it has been.
Seven weeks. Where did the time go? Devon, you are a star. Puppies, you are everything. Families get ready, because something very special is heading your way.
